What would you say are the potter fandom's all-time favourite, game changing fics? I've read TLAT but I'm not sure of any others...

4. Promises Honored

wearefanfictionaddicts

Title: Promises Honored (first book on the Unbroken Universe)
Author: Robin4
Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4881348/1/Promises-Honored
Rated: T (although it should probably be an “M” due to some pretty graphic violence)
Words: 98430
Language: English
Status: Complete
Summary
(from fanfiction.net): He made the choice knowing full well what the consequences might be, but expecting death does not necessarily prepare you for hell. In 1981, Sirius Black ignored the dangers to himself and became the Potters’ Secret Keeper. Prequel to Promises Unbroken, AU
First lines: Every beginning has an end, though sometimes the two flip-flopped or joined together, a phenomenon that some people called going full circle. He’d have called the concept crap, however. He’d been called many things in his life: friend, enemy; rebel, hero; student and teacher. The one thing he’d never been was predictable, but he was consistently inconsistent.

This story begins giving us Sirius Black fans something like a heart attack, with an epitaph that reads:

Sirius Black
1960-1981
Faithful until the end.
Gone, but never forgotten.

Chapter 1 is the Prologue, which is actually an Epilogue for the entire Series (funny, eh? Don’t worry, I didn’t understand much when I began reading this). As you can know from the summary, this is set in an Alternative Universe in which the Secret Keeper isn’t Peter but Sirius (we learn throughout the story how and why this came to happen).

“I can’t ask you do this,” James finally managed to get out around the lump in his throat.
“Good thing you don’t have to, then.”

There are many characters to this story, not only the ones we expect to obviously be there. We have Nynphadora Tonks, the older members of the Weasley family, Alastor Moody, Dumbledore, Arabella Figg (who is not a squib and actually plays a nice role in the story) and even Grindewald. Peter Pettigrew also appears, he is not left aside as happens in many Marauder’s era fanfiction (though you may have already realized this isn’t your normal, fluff Marauder’s fanfiction), and he actually plays a huge role in the entire Series. We also get to see Voldermort become who he is in the Harry Potter Series (the original, JK one). We see him transforming into a monster:

This close, Voldemort looked younger than the Ministry probably wanted him to appear. Solid. Impenetrable. Unbeatable.

This author makes it all about friendship and loyalty. The mere survival and development of the characters is based on that, on being able to trust in each other, which should have happened in the original series. I feel this entire fic is somehow based on one line given in Prisioner of Azkaban by our dear JK:

“Believe me,” croaked Black. “Believe me, Harry. I never betrayed James and Lily. I would have died before I betrayed them.” [chapter 19 of Prisioner of Azkaban]

And Robin4 (the author) gives us this one:

How did he make his eyes red, anyway? Glaring into them was hard, but Sirius managed. Barely.
“I won’t betray my friends.”
His captor laughed. “Won’t you?”

There are chapters focused entirely on Sirius, and how he’s dealing with his decision to become Secret Keeper and the consequences the author mentions in the Summary. There are also chapters focused on the other three Marauders, Lily and the rest of the Wizarding World as they deal with the ongoing war. We see how each of them become a key point to the resistance (having already joined the Order of the Phoenix), how the Ministry finally accepts what’s going on (they are as reluctant as they are in the original series) and begins dealing with it.

The end of this first book is nothing but thrilling. I think I finished it around three in the morning because I just couldn’t stop. And it leaves you hanging, so I had to begin reading Promises Unbroken right away, which continues where Promises Honored leaves.

I strongly recommend this fanfiction. It’s well written, it’s totally believable (being an AU) and it’s really hard to put down, you want to keep reading because you need it to be better -you’ll understand this once you begin reading it, I promise ;)! Hope you read it and enjoy as much as I did!
